Spa Cubes
Clarity Water Products
KDF media has been tested by the National Science Foundation and received NSF certification standards 42 and 61. Our reticulated KDF is currently used in commercial & residential applications, including the filtration of drinking water.
Simply place the Cubes in your water return and enjoy clean, chemical-free water with no effort. For Hot Tubs up to 500 gallons – typically lasts 3-5 months.
What it Does
The Filter Foam technology uses Power Cubes to provide excellent, Chlorine-free water for spas through filtration rather than the introduction of chemicals to the water. Chlorine attacks organic matter, and your skin is your body’s largest organ. Chlorine irritates eyes, nose membranes, and lungs and it leaves skin and hair dry and flaky. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to Chlorine can be harmful to your health. Biguanide, Bromine and Chlorine can cause allergic reactions and can permeate the spa walls.
Filter Foam Cubes use a unique form of KDF copper-zinc media which has been molded into soft cubes that look like a gold sponge. KDF is excellent at removing Chlorine for long periods of time while also acting as a descalant and maintaining a bacteriostatic environment. KDF meets NSF Standards 42 and 61 and has been tested to remove heavy metals and inorganics as well as Chlorine from water.
Filtration inside the pool or spa system takes place as the water twists and turns through the Spa Cubes’ maze of copper-zinc fibers. This tortuous movement increases contact time with the cubes during each pass through the media, as the water is recirculated through the media over and over.
How It Works
Filter Foam Power Cubes use an all-natural process that works by catalytic action and the redox (reduction/oxidation) principal of dissimilar metals. As water passes through the Spa Cubes a chemical reaction causes zinc and copper hydroxides to form in controlled amounts. These controlled releases of copper and zinc oxides are carried into the filtered water where they provide hostile conditions for growth. This means cleaner water for bathing plus reduced time and labor in keeping the spa clean.
Filter Foam Cubes also safeguard your spa by reducing the need for Chlorine and other chemicals that corrode pipes and equipment. Plus, chemical costs are minimal. After heavy loads from excess bathers, heavy rain, wind or pets, a one-time shock treatment with potassium monopersulfate, or other shocking agents like ozone, hydrogen peroxide or Chlorine is usually sufficient to solve the problem. The Spa Cubes also help to neutralize slightly acidic water, thereby reducing or eliminating the use of pH chemicals.
How To Use The Spa Cubes
- Water flowing through the Spa Cubes makes it work. A spa needs to circulate the water to provide maximum contact with the cubes. The best way to do this is to circulate the water for at least 12 continuous hours each day at 10 gpm. Do not allow suctioning except at the skimmer or wherever the cubes are placed. If 12 continuous hours is not possible circulate the water for three 2-hour periods daily AND run the pump at low speed for at least 30 minutes after each spa use.
- Don’t worry about pH. It self regulates between 7.4 and 8.2. Chemicals intended to control pH severely reduce the cube’s efficiency. Most pH parameters for spas are based on using Chlorine and are not relevant when the cubes are used.
- Likewise, the cubes tend to regulate water’s softness. The main reason water is hard is that calcium is present. The Spa Cubes do not remove calcium, but they make the water act softer by changing calcium’s cellular morphology so that it cannot adhere to a surface. The calcium does not deposit scale on surfaces.
- If you test the water for softness in a Spa Cube treated spa, however, the test will show any calcium present because it does not distinguish between calcium’s various morphologies.
- There are no health issues with the cubes’ capacity to make water act softer. Using chemicals to soften the water, in addition to the cubes, will restrict the efficiency and life of the cubes. In normal operating conditions using the cubes no chemicals are needed for softening.
- The Spa Cubes come in a bag designed to capture sediment. If the bag becomes clogged it decreases the flow of water through the cubes. Keep the bag clean if needed.
FAQs
-
Q) How does it work?
A) The Spa Cubes work through a controlled release of copper-zinc ions.
-
Q) How does it control algae and bacteria?
A) Copper is a known algaecide. The release of copper-zinc ions controls bacteria and algae growth.
-
Q) Why don’t I need to test?
A) You can test if you want to but it’s not necessary. This is because the copper-zinc cubes will control bacteria and algae as well as scale and hardness and will also self regulate the pH.
-
Q) Why is the pH higher than with chlorine?
A) Chlorine works best at pH levels between 7.2 and 7.6. Our copper-zinc cubes will seek their best operating pH levels. This is usually between 7.6 and 8.2. Don’t try to lower the pH with chemicals as that will reduce the effectiveness of the cubes. It is recommended that you test for pH for a few days after the cubes are installed to determine a base level for the pH. Once a baseline has been established you can then determine if the pH is decreasing.
-
Q) Is there a test I can perform to determine if the cubes are still working?
A) Water turns cloudy because of an increase in bacteria load. When bacteria increase the pH decreases. So you can test your water for pH and if it decreases below 7.2 and continues to decrease it’s time to change the cubes. This is the reason to establish an initial baseline.
-
Q) Are there other tests?
A) You will not need to test your water when using the cubes. However, you can test for copper levels and/or zinc levels. These levels will also diminish as the cubes wear down.
-
Q) What happens if my spa turns cloudy?
A) Under normal circumstances the water in your spa should be clear. If the water
turns cloudy it could mean that the cubes are not seeing enough water. Increase the amount of time your pump runs to increase the contact time that the water has with the cubes. MAKE SURE THAT WHEN WATER RUNS THROUGH THE CUBES THERE IS NO SUCTION ELSEWHERE. If the water remains cloudy it might be time to replace the cubes..B} The copper-zinc cubes will work on existing scale changing it from a hard scale to a “soft”
scale. During this process the “soft” scale will flake off and dissolve into the water. The dissolved
scale can make the water appear cloudy. If this is the cause of the cloudiness in the water, use a
finer (smaller) micron size sediment or sand filter to clear up the water, or use a coagulent to
clump the molecules together for easier physical removal. -
Q) What are NOT Normal circumstances?
A) Excessive bather load, meaning too many people in the spa at once, unusual
climactic conditions, meaning excessive rain or heat, and animals swimming in the water are all
considered not normal operating conditions and can cause a sudden, dramatic increase in
bacteria load. A sudden increase in bacteria could overwhelm the system and cause the water to
turn cloudy. -
Q) If a condition occurs how do I get my water back to normal?
A) If the water does not clear up by itself within 24 hours of continual use of the Spa Cubes you
should do a mini-shock to diminish the bacteria load so the cubes can resume normal operation.
Remove the cubes during the shocking period. -
Q) What is a mini-shock?
A) A mini-shock is using a dose of your shocking agent for a 24 hour period to diminish the
bacteria load. Remove the cubes from the spa during the shocking period. -
Q) Will I need to treat my water in any other way?
A) When using the Spa Cubes no other treatment should be necessary. As a matter of fact, using
chemicals will diminish the efficiency of the cubes. However, many customers will do a mini-shock
anywhere from once a week to once every six weeks to not at all just as preventative
maintenance. Whenever you mini-shock make sure to remove the cubes and return them after 12
hours. -
Q) What if my pool or spa suddenly turns green?
A) There is nothing in the Spa Cubes to cause your water to turn green. More than likely some
nitrogen based compound (fertilizer, herbicide or pesticide) has found its way into your water.
There are some special chemicals which you might need to use to remove the nitrogen
compounds. Consult your pool or spa expert. Remember to remove the cubes from your spa during treatment. -
Q) How do I know when the Spa Cubes stop working?
A) Your water will turn cloudy and will not recover. Unless this is a result of the unusual
conditions listed elsewhere which might require a mini-shock, this is the first sign the cubes might
be reaching the end of its useful life. You can also test pH levels. ( See question # 5) -
Q) What does it mean when the cubes start to get dark?
A) It is normal for the cubes to get darker in color. This actually shows that the cubes are working.
During the oxidation process the cubes will darken as they get used.
